Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing

Periodontal scaling and root planing is a “deep cleaning” process for the roots of your teeth. It is your first line of defense against gum disease.

Our first step is to scale or clean the roots of your teeth, removing bacteria such as plaque and calculus (also called tartar). Next, we plane or smooth the roots so bacteria have a more difficult time reattaching to the root.

A local anesthetic or other forms of sedation may be used in order to ensure you are completely comfortable.
